Personalised Vision treatments

Zyoptix means that laser eye treatment is now unique to each eye. With Zyoptix, treatment is designed specifically to treat your individual vision errors. Zyoptix could improve the quality of your vision. In a clinical study conducted by Independent Refractive surgeons on behalf of Bausch & Lomb, significantly more Zyoptix patients had less problems with night driving than patients undergoing treatment with a Bausch and Lomb Standard Laser. Each Zyoptix assessment involves an extra diagnostic (screening) process to let the surgeon understand your vision better and select the most suitable treatment for you. In the Zyoptix system the latest, most advanced technology is used to detect and treat very small vision errors. The Zyoptix system has many advanced built-in safety features that help to optimise the success of your treatment. Zyoptix, like standard laser treatment, is fast and virtually painless.

Choosing the right Treatment

Your eye and vision are like your fingerprint – truly distinctive and personal. It is distinctive because light is scattered unevenly to form a pattern that is unique to your eye and because your cornea has a unique shape. Each Zyoptix assessment involves an extra diagnostic (screening) process extensive enough to let the surgeon see every eye's unique optical characteristics.

With a Zyoptix assessment, you can rest assured that your surgeon now has an even broader base of information on which to decide whether your eyes are suitable for treatment, and to plan the right treatment for you.

How Zyoptix works

Zyoptix software combines data from two different types of diagnostic equipment, then programmes the laser with your unique treatment, based on this data. Data is collected to assess the structure of your cornea (called topography). Data is also collected from a measurement of your optical system using the advanced wavefront technology - a measurement not normally taken with Standard LASIK treatments.

The next sections will explain how the topographer and wavefront work together to ensure the most thorough screening and treatment programme.

The wavefront factor: measuring your vision

Wavefront was first developed by astrophysicists and has now been applied to Zyoptix. It provides the most technologically advanced measurement not just of standard visual but also of scattered light errors known as 'aberrations'.

Wavefront technology or aberrometry is based on the principle that if an eye had no imperfections at all, light passed through it would not scatter. But because no eye is perfect, light scatters to form distinct patterns - called a wavefront. Wavefront technology measures your personal/individual patterns and thus allows the surgeon to plan a treatment that exactly matches individual vision errors.

Your wavefront will be measured by the market-leading aberrometer, the Zywave™ Aberrometer from Bausch & Lomb. The Zywave™ aberrometer measures the eye from the centre to the outer edges (the periphery) of the pupil. This is especially important, because at night your pupils open up and more light is scattered in the periphery of the pupils.

Your surgeon needs to know as much about your night-time as your day-time vision.

Zyoptix topography: assessing your corneal surface

While it is important that your surgeon measures your optical system, it is equally important to know the shape of your cornea. This screening test enables the surgeon to assess the general health and thickness of your cornea and so to determine if you are suitable for laser eye treatment.

The Zyoptix system collects this information from over 9,000 points across the cornea, using Bausch & Lomb’s Orbscan® IIz (anterior segment analysis system) market-leading topographer.

Zyoptix® - Its Place in Permanent Vision Correction

Surgeon with patientAlthough people often think of laser eye treatment as ‘new’, laser vision correction has been available for more than 10 years. This section gives a brief overview of the history of the most common types of refractive surgery, starting at the most recent developments:

Wavefront guided laser eye treatments - Zyoptix®

This is an advanced form of Standard LASIK (see below).
Both a wavefront- guided LASIK treatment and Standard LASIK are performed using the same surgical technique. The difference is that with a wavefrontguided treatment, additional information is collected in the during the clinical examination and programmed into the laser. (See next section for more information).

Zyoptix, Bausch & Lomb’s wavefront- guided treatment, was the world’s first commercially available wavefront system and was launched in September 2000 in Europe, Canada, Latin America and Asia. By September 2003, more than 100,000 patients world-wide had been treated with Zyoptix. In early October 2003, after extensive clinical trials, the FDA approved Zyoptix for use in the USA.

In September 2003, Bausch & Lomb introduced the next generation in personalised vision correction with the arrival of the Zyoptix 100 laser. This new technology provides for faster treatment times and uses state-of-the-art Iris Recognition technology to ensure the upmost in patient safety.

Standard LASIK (LASer In Situ Keratomileusis)

LASIK is a highly automated, computer-controlled procedure which takes just 3-5 minutes, is virtually painless and offers rapid, next-day recovery.

The surgeon creates a thin flap through the top layer of the cornea. The flap is very gently folded over and the surgeon performs the laser treatment on the layer underneath. This usually takes about 2 minutes per eye. The flap is then replaced and left to heal naturally without the need for any stitches.

Closing the flap

The Laser

Creating the flap

Standard LASIK still achieves very good results for many patients – you can see why it’s currently the most popular laser eye surgery in the USA and Europe.

In the USA, 92.3 percent of all eye treatments for near-sight, far-sight and astigmatism are currently done with LASIK, while in Europe, 523,000 procedures were undertaken in 2003, and almost 2 million treatments world-wide.

Zyoptix

Although based on the same technique, Zyoptix is a much more advanced form of LASIK. Specifically, Zyoptix is different because its highly sophisticated technology allows the surgeon to:

  • examine each eye for previously unseen details known as ‘aberrations’

  • plan the treatment that can correct individual visual errors and aberrations in each eye

  • programme a laser with a combination of smaller and larger beams to deliver a precise treatment – a treatment that is unique to each patient.

Zyoptix and LASIK corrections: the big differences

In addition to standard visual errors, Zyoptix also measures and treats small vision errors (higher order aberrations) that scatters light in a pattern that is unique to you. Scattered light errors could, for example, cause shading seen round one edge of a perfectly round light, and certainly they are an important cause of poor quality night vision. About 70% of people could benefit from Zyoptix treatment.

These small errors are detected with wavefront technology and treated by the laser with a combination of smaller and larger beams, allowing the surgeon to deliver a more precise, personalised treatment.

In a clinical trial conducted by Bausch & Lomb and approved by the FDA, results showed that:

  • Zyoptix provides excellent quality of vision in all lighting conditions.

  • Zyoptix provides outstanding visual acuity with 91.3% of patients achieving 20/20 (6/6) vision.

  • Zyoptix patients reported less problems with night driving, haloes & glare when compared to Bausch & Lomb standard LASIK results.

  • 98.8% of patients treated with Zyoptix were very satisfied with their treatment and would have it done again.

Improved Quality of Vision

In low lighting conditions our pupils expand (or ‘dilate’). Research shows that there are more ‘aberrations’ or optical imperfections at the outer edges (periphery) of the pupil. This results in a distortion of the light entering the eye. As a result, it is possible to be able to look at a round light source in the distance, but instead of seeing a perfectly round shape, you will see an irregular image. This distortion of light reduces the quality of our vision and explains one of the reasons why many patients experience difficulty with their vision when driving at night.

Zyoptix treatments have been designed to remove these optical imperfections, improving not just what we see, but the quality of how we see objects.

  • 97% of patients reported a marked or extreme improvement in their quality of vision.

  • 98.2% of patients said they would have a Zyoptix treatment again.

What results can you expect?

Significantly more Zyoptix patients in this study experienced improved results with their vision when driving at night than patients that had received a standard Bausch & Lomb LASIK treatment.

Night Driving

More than 8 out of 10 Zyoptix patients in this study reported same or better quality of vision in various common light conditions. 90.7% of patients reported the same or fewer difficulties with night driving.

Excellent Visual Acuity

Zyoptix produces a better quality of vision as well excellent visual acuity results. In this recent FDA approved trial, 91.3% of patients achieved 20/20 (6/6) vision without any correction 6 months after the treatment. 99.4% of patients achieved 20/40. 70.3% of patients achieved 20/16 vision without any glasses or spectacles, which is an improvement over the accepted standard of 20/20 vision.
